The other week, I wrote about my surprise when all of the sudden, I couldn’t get enough of the color yellow. Well, just when I thought my surprise was over, I fell in love with ruffled statement tops. After years of perfecting effortless minimalism and the art of a simple, well tailored jacket…here I am gravitating toward ruffled, patterned, brightly colored, embroidered statement blouses. Today, I’m here to bring you my tips for wearing a statement blouse along with some of my favorites for under $50!
1. Make sure your ruffles are proportionate
We’ve all seen ruffles that make or break an outfit. Don’t let ruffles overtake your outfit or your body. Whether your top is slightly more subtle or seriously over the top, make sure we can still see your shape.
2. Balance the volume of your top
Since I am only 5′ 3” I have to be very aware not to let volume of my ruffle top take over my body size. I paired this cute ASOS shirt with light wash skinny jeans from Stitch Fix and simple suede heels so my frame wasn’t overwhelmed.
In this outfit, a simple skirt and nude heel kept me from drowning in ruffles, stripes, and embroidery.
3. Let your statement blouse make the statement!
For me, I like letting my top make the statement. That means pairing my ruffles with minimal jewelry, simple jeans, and sleek heels. Of course, that’s not to say that you can’t experiment an with an entire look that makes a statement.
4. The dressing room is your best friend
Bold, voluminous, colorful, patterned blouses always look different on a hanger than in the dressing room. And that can work in your favor! Always try on a statement blouse before you buy it. If you’re shopping online, order a couple sizes and don’t be afraid to order a few different ruffle tops. Sometimes, it takes a few tries to find the perfect piece for you!
