Aimee Song of Song of Style paved the way for fashion bloggers everywhere. And believe me, I’m more than happy to follow in her steps. Especially if she’s walking in Gucci mules. Written by Aimee herself, Capture Your Style holds 200 pages of all of Aimee’s secret sauce for taking incredible Instagram photos while building your brand and style. After obsessing over each page, I picked out my favorite Instagram tips from Capture Your Style to help you create amazing content and build a brand.
Tip 1) Think in 12’s
Aimee encourages you to think about both your individual photos and your entire grid. She says your goal is to have twelve squares that tell a cohesive story. The story can be an occasion, a color scheme, or a photography style. This creates a flow for your photos and a cohesive look.
Tip 2) Write a Mission Statement
Write a basic, one sentence statement that says why you have your Instagram account and what you want to achieve. For Hot Dress Hot Mess, it is “to pair the glamour of fashion with the reality of everyday life.” For me, this means letting my Instagram tell the story of my imperfect life with my love for fashion.
Tip 3) Utilize The Golden Ratio
This rule is so crucial to anyone who is taking and publishing photos. The golden ratio, explains how photos should be composed and that the subject should slightly off center. Learning the basics of photography will make your Instagram photos and grid look more aesthetically pleasing.
Tip 4) Use Your Imagination
Aimee says when thinking about your outfit shots, pretend you’re choosing the costumes for a scene in a movie. Ask yourself what is the story behind the photo and what would the character (you) be wearing? Finally, how would it be styled in the final shot? Get creative!
Tip 5) Tell a Story
Use your Instagram grid to tell a story. It can be a 3, 6, 9, or 12 photo story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. For example during a weekend getaway, Friday is an #OOTN, Saturday is a shopping pic, and Sunday is a brunch pic. This gives your followers a story to follow along with!
Tip 6) Know your Timing
Know when your audience is active on Instagram. For me, this has changed my Instagram game completely. Experiment with a few different times a day and decide when your photos get the most activity. I personally post after 9pm each night which works best for me.
Tip 7) Create a Strategy
Determine your Insta goals and set up steps to achieve them. For example, set the precise amount of followers you want by a certain time. Then break down how many followers you need to gain per week and use some of these tips to achieve it!
What Aimee says, Bailey does. Okay not completely, but pretty close. I love Capture Your Style because it breaks down the barrier of who Aimee looks like and who she is. She’s not just a Chloe clad California girl, she’s a bestie who wants to to help you build a creative platform. And of course, make your shoe-fies perfect.
