Street style dominates Instagram and Pinterest. You know the photos. The girls who are are effortlessly, but perfectly styled and photographed using the street as their runway – handbag and latte in hand. Lately, my “street style” has been a rain coat and boots with a half eaten croissant sticking out of my mouth while I dig through my purse trying to find my phone. So while sucking down an Americano and trying not to break into a sweat, I decided to see what pieces are essential to achieve that street style look. And it turns out, this “effortless” look is actually pretty…effortless.
Leather Jacket
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now…a leather jacket is a 100% must have! A leather jacket is your key to street style to success. Throw your jacket over a graphic tee, a sweater, a blouse…seriously anything and you look instantly stylish.
Distressed Denim
Distressed, raw hem denim is one of spring’s most popular trends. Utilize distressed denim or raw hem denim to give your outfit that laid back, casual vibe. Heels with distressed denim is one of my favorite combos because you get a contrasting dressy and messy aesthetic.
Graphic Tee
Graphic and logo tees have made a huge comeback in the past few months starting from designers like Calvin Klein and Gucci. A graphic tee is the perfect addition to any street style outfit and can make your outfit more personal. Grab your favorite band tee, logo tee, or sassy ‘I woke up like this’ tee for a unique, on trend outfit.
Killer Sunglasses
If there’s one item to take your outfit to the next level, it’s sunglasses. Sunglasses set the tone of your outfit and how you see the world (literally, figuratively, insert some kind of pun here). Circular sunglasses say vintage, cat eye sunglasses say retro, aviators say chill, and big ol’ cover your face sunnies say glamourous. Use sunglasses as a way to dictate your outfit and your mood.
Throw a Scarf on Your Bag
I always see other girls tie a scarf around their handbag and it look so chic! So, I decided to give it a try. Turns out, adding a scarf is an easy way to make your street style look more fashion forward and thought out. My tip is to find a silk, square scarf to avoid it dragging on the ground or becoming bulky.
Now, you can achieve effortless street style without hardly any effort at all!

Behind the Scenes:
While all looks well in these photos, there’s more to the story. Since this post is about street style, I was going to photograph in the streets of Seattle. Unfortunately, the day before my car broke down and I discovered a rat “had a vacation” (their words, not mine) under the hood of my car, chewing up the wires. After I had a minor germaphobic freak out, I accepted the facts and let the auto shop fix my car and I took photos nearby at the Microsoft campus in Redmond. My life is always a combo of hot dress and hot mess!
