For every fashionista, our time, money, and day dreams are dedicated to what we wear. With such valuable resources committed to fashion, we need to treat our sartorial obsession the same way we treat our health, finances, and career– with new year’s resolutions. Let’s toast to the new year and 6 style resolutions that guarantee a more fashionable 2016.
1. Clean out your closet
Cleaning out your closet is first on the list of your 2016 style resolutions. Get a fresh start and toss out anything you wore less than 3 times in the last year. If you hardly wore it or it’s been waiting too long for the perfect complement piece, get rid of it. It hurts a little, but there are better items waiting to take up precious closet space.
2. Find inspiration
So you’ve just cleaned out your closet and there is space waiting to be filled! Before you go ham at Zara or Nordstrom, take a moment to research and think about what you want your overall style to look like. Find bloggers, celebrities, or stylists you admire and see what they are wearing. This will help you have a vision when choosing new pieces.
3. Build a cohesive wardrobe
Be strategic about what you purchase by envisioning how each piece will work with your entire wardrobe. Find pieces that can be interchanged with one another to create multiple outfits. Fewer pieces that result in more outfits…who can argue that?
4. Find a reliable shopping buddy
We all have the friend who encourages us to splurge every time we shop together. While that works every now and then, splurging consistently and buying everything in sight does not last long. Find a reliable shopping buddy who is realistic about what you need and has your best interest at heart. And obviously that friend will encourage you to splurge when the time is right!
5. Invest rather than spend
$20 here, $15 there, another $30 here and as soon as you know it you spent $100 on a couple Forever 21 sweaters and a cheap cross body. At the time, it seems like you’re shopping smart by saving money, but really you’re spending money on items that won’t last or maybe you don’t want as much. Be aware of small purchases and use that money to save up for higher quality pieces.
6. Try new trends
It’s easy to get stuck in a style rut. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought clothes that look virtually the same. While you build your cohesive wardrobe, don’t be afraid to implement a few trendier pieces in the new year. Fashion is about experimentation and self-expression, so grab 2016 by the feathers, sequins, leopard print, or whatever trend comes your way!
