Life isn’t always Instagram worthy outfits, flawless eyeliner, and perfectly undone beach hair. Sometimes, our beach hair is more like bedhead, our outfits more like pajamas, and our winged eyeliner more like a giant smudge. Not getting our dream job, breaking up with our significant other, or something as simple as adjusting to life in a new city can leave anyone feeling discouraged, unmotivated, and far from fabulous.
These times are unavoidable but can be conquered – especially with these 5 tips to help you start feeling better today!
1. Do something that brings back good memories
On days where we feel like total sh**, there’s no harm in doing something that brings back good memories. For me, it’s watching a familiar movie that I know always makes me laugh. For you, it might be visiting a familiar place where you always enjoy yourself or scrap booking your favorite photos from college. Soak in the nostalgia for awhile then move forward.
2. Do something that feels good
When you’re feeling blue, treat your body to something relaxing or rejuvenating. Think – bubble bath, pedicure, laying in the sun, or getting exercise. When we concentrate on how good laying in our doughnut shaped tube feels (this directly applies to me!) or that amazing, worn out feeling after a long run, we are less likely to dwell on our sadness.
3. Make a power playlist
Nothing is a quicker pick me up than a good song. I can’t make myself feel sad listening to that Panda song – haha! Create a playlist for yourself that makes you feel happy, strong, and excited for life. Now, play it loud and dance as needed.
4. Write it Down
I can’t tell you how many times my mom has told me to write down my feelings. While this is not my favorite activity, it always helps. It’s easy for our thoughts to spin in our mind or to be overwhelmed with emotion. Try writing down your thoughts and feelings. You’ll be able to express your emotion and possibly come to some logical realizations.
5. Treat Yo Self!
My favorite tip of all…Treat Yo Self! Bad days suck, but they suck a little less when you have a new jacket to wear or a new hairstyle to rock. Yes, I’m encouraging shopping as a form of coping…in control, responsible shopping. New things won’t solve your problems but on a rough day, it helps.
The fact is, we all go through times where we’d rather lay in bed all day then even begin to think about doing our makeup. These aren’t our proudest moments where we’re taking selfies, tweeting out #blessed, or thinking we can conquer the world.
However, I’d like to argue that these are moments we should be most proud of because we show ourselves our true capability and perseverance. Sure, this isn’t the day we got promoted or mistaken for Scarlett Johannsen. But, this is the day we decided to pick ourselves up and try again. To me, that is more valuable than even the most perfect outfit.
