I always feel challenged trying to decide what to wear on Thanksgiving. A holiday surrounding a giant feast should really cater to a t-shirt and stretchy fat pants. However on Thanksgiving, we usually find ourselves home from college proving to our parents we do more than drink, meeting the boyfriend’s family, or reminiscing with the childhood friends we’ve lost track of. For such occasions, we like to look our best. What can we wear that will allow us to sneak an extra piece of pumpkin pie without a belt bursting or play charades without flashing a florescent thong? I’ve come up with a few Thanksgiving outfit ideas from blogger approved 5 foolproof tips to ensure you can eat turkey and look fashionable too.
1. Don’t focus on your shoes
I can’t tell you how many times I wear amazing shoes that the hostess makes me take off indoors. Girl, you’re going to be walking around in socks or bare feel all night so make sure the rest of your outfit is on point – and that your socks match. This outfit is great because her look is flawless with or without shoes.
2. For God’s sake don’t wear anything tight.
I’m not sure I need to say this but I will. We know you’ve been working out at the gym, but Thanksgiving is not the time to show off that head turning body con dress. Thanksgiving is a universal cheat day so eat up! Opt for something subtly sexy and loose fitting like this burgundy sweater dress from blogger Negin Mirsalehi.
3. Don’t wear a Thanksgiving outfit that is too expensive.
There are a lot of dangerous items during Thanksgiving – red wine, cranberry sauce, your cousin’s crazy children. The chances of something happening to your white silk blouse are exponentially higher during a family gathering compared to an adult cocktail party. This look is stylish and easily replaceable from Forever 21 or Zara.
4. Don’t be afraid to go casual.
Thanksgiving is about being with family and friends while enjoying a meal together. If you don’t want to dress up or be fancy, then don’t. You can be casual and still look put together and festive. I love the emerald color of this fur vest; it’s perfect for the holidays! The plaid and fur combo is casual and fashionable while the jeans and combat boots guarantee you’ll be comfortable all evening.
5. Avoid revealing clothing.
Of course you wouldn’t wear anything provocative to dinner, but even the tiniest cleavage or short skirt could become an issue. You might bend over one too many times to pick up your family’s new puppy and bam, booty flashed. Or you lean over to grab more green beans and woah, too much boob in front of Uncle Jerry. Haha you get my point. This outfit has high necklines, a long skirt, and black tights. No fashion faux pas here!
