By now I’m sure you’re very familiar with athleisure. What started as a trend donned by supermodels running in between photo shoots, has transformed into full fashion collections. While usually I’d rather not be reminded of the gym when I see my outfit, I recently began to embrace the athleisure trend. It also didn’t hurt that I got to visit the Nike employee store in Beaverton, Oregon again (remember last year’s purchase?) to shop their latest products for 50% off.
Creating the perfect athleisure outfit is a fine line between looking like you don’t understand what real pants are versus looking athletic and stylish. Today I’m giving you my 5 tips to rock athleisure without looking lazy!
1. Choose fashion forward athletic pieces
Let me be the first to tell you, this is not what I look like when I’m at the gym. My gym clothes are mostly over worn tank tops and old athletic shorts. To get away with wearing athletic clothes as “real” clothes, look for fashionable sportswear that translates from the gym to grabbing coffee afterwards.
For example, these Nike Pro Hypercool Training Capris are specially made for high performance exercise. But, the perforated wrap detail and bold Nike logo make these leggings the a fashionable statement for an athleisure outfit. Finally, I couldn’t say no to the oversize Nike cardigan that feels like your favorite hoodie.
2) Do your hair.
Yes, I said it even though I didn’t want to. Personally, doing my hair is one of my least favorite activities. However, when you’re sporting a casual, athletic look, styled hair can be the difference between looking like slob or Gigi Hadid. Slob or Gigi Hadid? Gigi it is.
3) Accessorize your athleisure!
Make your athleisure blend into everyday life with accessories. Accessorizing with jewelry, a scarf, or sunglasses is an easy way to make your outfit more intentionally stylish and less I just got done with yoga.
4) Elevate your look with a stylish handbag
You don’t carry your gym clothes in your Celine bag right? Well, I wouldn’t if I had one. Nonetheless, sporting a fashionable handbag will instantly elevate your look to appear put together and ready for a day of brunch or shopping.
5) Trade your gym shoes for lifestyle sneakers
Chances are your gym shoes are worn and probably don’t smell great…well maybe that’s just me. Ditch your running shoes for a pair of stylish sneakers. These days you can’t turn your head in a mall without seeing amazing, fashionable sneakers. I snagged a pair of Nike Air Max Zero (Womens) in black and I’m obsessed! Not only are they stylish but also comfortable. It’s about time!
Finally, enjoy it!
Take advantage of a trend that revolves around feeling comfortable. Jump on the athleisure train as soon as possible and ride it as long as you can – no uncomfortable shoes involved.
